Act 2, scene 1: Polonius starts out by talking to Reynaldo
and ordering him to go and investigate in Paris about Laertes and his actions. This portrays Polonius as a caring father who will do whatever he can
in his power to arrive to the point of satisfaction by knowing and becoming aware
of how his son is doing. Polonius even trains his servant Reynaldo to obtain
the information he wants. After Reynaldo's talk with Polonius, Ophelia behaves
paranoid because of Hamlet's way of treating her. Hamlet is illustrated as
being in discomfort and unable to do anything to strengthen his and Ophelia's
relationship. Polonius' reaction at hearing Hamlet's actions are to go to the
king, which prove that he takes his children's concerns seriously and is a
caring father.
